Abstract: [The Eleonora's Falcon in the Columbretes islands]. A description of the colony of Eleonora's Falcon Falco eleonorae in Columbretes Is. is given. The falcons were present from the second half of april until the beginning of november. The colony held 16 pair in 1985. Only 3.1 % were dark morph adults. Nest site selection was due to human pressure, and low-pressure sites were selected. Clutch size was 2.75 (n=12) and fledging success per nest was 2.1 (89.7 % from 29 hatched eggs). Prey composition was similar to that obtained in Balearic islands (Pearson Correl.= 0.92), migrant passerines were the main prey, subfam. Turdinae and Silviinae being the dominants.

A coastal study of skua movements and presence in the gulf of Valencia (W Mediterranean), was carried out between january 1986 and july 1990. Four species were recorded. Stercorarius parasiticus was the commonest and dark morph adult class was the dominant. Catharacta skua was the most abundant in winter. S. pomarinus was only observed during its migration displacements. There were eight exceptional records of S. longicaudus, the first for the area. Information about abundance, wintering, age classes, morph and kleptoparasitic feeding is also given. The presence of skuas in the coast was correlated with moderate to strong winds from SE-NE, with large numbers of gulls and terns and with fishing boats.

During the 1991 breeding season, a moratorium on inshore fishing caused low breeding success at the Audouin's Gull colonies of Ebro delta and Columbretes islands. Postbreeding migration of juvenile Audouin's Gull in the coast of l'Albufera de Valencia (E Spain) occurs from the end of the first half of july and in august, with maximum influx at the end of july. Seawatching done in previous years (1989 and 1990) showed 10.5 juvenile/hr (during 55.5 hours). After the 1991 breeding failure, data obtained was 2.5 juvenile/hr (26 hours). Seawatching probed to be an indicator of the breeding success.

Abstract: During the 1991 breeding season, there was a low breeding success at two of the Spanish colonies of Audouin's Gull. Breeding success was estimated about 0.84 fledged chicks per pair (n= 3.950) in the Ebro delta and 0.06 (n = 350) in the Columbretes islands. The most probable cause of the failure was the implementation of a voluntary moratorium on inshore fishing in the waters of both Tarragona and Castellón provinces, due to the depleted fish stocks.

Though the moult of flight-feathers is to be expected in summering individuals, there were no previous records of Black Scoters undergoing moult in the gulf of Valencia. The timing of moult is described for the two immature birds, a female that was captured and a male that was oiled, both in august 1996. Both would have remained unrecorded if humans had not interfered with them, so it seems possible that other Black Scoters moulting in the gulf of Valencia could remain unrecorded.

Abstract: Habitat for nesting seabirds at l'Albufera de Valencia (E Spain) is largely man affected. From 1993 to 1998, a development and management plan of the Racó de l'Olla, the outstanding remaining salt marsh habitat of the beach barrier, lead to population increase and recruitment for two gull (Larus ridibundus, L. genei) and five tern (Gelochelidon nilotica, Sterna sandvicensis, S. bengalensis, S. hirundo, S. albifrons) species. Reserve management includes wardening and control of water level, vegetation and predators. Optimal conditions for nesting, and reduced predation and disturbance, facilitated the growth of the breeding populations in the short term. Nevertheless, habitat and bird responses for management need to be evaluated in the long term.

Abstract: On at least six occasions since the late 1980s, dark-morph Western Reef Egrets of the nominate subspecies gularis have been observed during the breeding season at l'Albufera de Valencia, in E Spain. Three instances of breeding by mixed pairs of this species and Little Egret E. garzetta were recorded in 1988, 1989 and 1990. In addition, apparent hybrids, with pale grey body and with variably extensive white on the head, wings and underparts (including in adult plumage), have been observed at this site repetedly since 1993. There is no definite evidence for the occurrence of a dark morph of the Little Egret.

Abstract: [The Kentish Plover at the province of Castellón: present situation and associated problems]. The number of the breeding pairs of Kentish Plover obtained during 2000 and 2001 in the Castellón province (E Spain) is given here, together with the description of the breeding locations used. There were obtained about 170 pairs, it reflecting a decrease of 51.5 % in 2001, compared with the data obtained in 1993. There was a small increase in the density of pairs in the breeding locations, accompanied by the desertion of some previously used sites. The Kentish Plover bred along the coastline, preferring beaches with sand and dune vegetation. Negative impacts registered at the breeding location were combined, degrading the breeding habitat conditions. Car and pedestrian traffic was the outstanding impact.

Abstract: [Wintering wildfowl in l'Albufera Natural Park: Description and Affecting Environmental Factors]. The results of the censuses of the wintering wildfowl in l'Albufera de Valencia (E Spain) from 1984-1985 to 1999-2000 is analysed. Up to 16 species were recorded. January censuses averaged 29.811 birds. Dominant species were Shoveler Anas clypeata, Red-crested Pochard Netta rufina and Mallard Anas platyrhynchos. It was observed a significant wintering population decrease (rs=-0.616) over the 16 years, the bigger decreases were obtained in Red-crested Pochard and Eurasian Teal Anas crecca. Roosts were located in flooded paddy fields and into the lagoon water body. The origin (countries) of this wintering population and the environmental factors affecting their abundance (especially flooded surface and hunting) are also described.

Abstract: The Marbled Teal is a scarce species in l'Albufera. Since 1992, the implementation of a saltmarsh management plan has favoured the species. Most birds occur in Spring and Summer, and winter records are rare. Spring arrivals occur in late March when flock size is small (mean 3.0) and maximum count low (20 birds). Between 1994 and 2001, breeding numbers have ranged from 2 to 6 pairs. Hatching takes place mainly in mid-July and brood size has averaged 11.3 ducklings.

Dies, J. I., Ramón, N. and Prosper, J. 2003. Winter breeding by Black-crowned Night Heron in Eastern Spain. Waterbirds 26(3): 379-382. [English text]
Abstract: Winter breeding by Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) in l'Albufera de Valencia, Spain, during three consecutive years is described. Winter presence in the area was recorded since 1995 and winter breeding was first confirmed in February 2001. Nests were built at roosts in wooded areas on a barrier beach, using tall pine trees (Pinus halepensis). The number of birds attending the roosts ranged 100-200 individuals, but only nine to eleven nests were built each year and only a few chicks survived to fledging. We suggest that the abundance of the introduced Red Swamp Crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) increased food availability when rice field were ploughed in early winter, and mild temperatures may have encouraged Black-crowned Night Heron to extend their presence into the winter season and to permit egg laying into the winter months. Nevertheless, the extra food supplied during rice operations declined markedly in March and may have forced nest desertions that month.

Abstract: Field separation of Snowy Egret, Little Egret (LE) and Western Reef-Heron (WRH) is discussed. Records of LE and WRH in the Americas are given through May 2001. With increasing numbers in their areas of origin, combined with a tendency toward dispersion and vagrancy, LE and WRH may in the future, in the right habitat, show up almost anywhere in coastal eastern North America. Aditional sightings might be expected, and the possibility of breeding by LE in the Americas should not be ruled out.

Abstract: Records of Mediterranean Gull (Larus melanocephalus) within the Racó de l'Olla reserve were obtained from 1993 to 2003, since the implementation of a restoration plan until the first successful breeding by the species. The presence of Mediterranean Gull at the breeding site extended from late March to early August. The species was recorded all years. Maximum counts for every age-class group were low, scoring 0-10 birds per year and showing no significant trend. Individuals engaged in terrestrial courtship were recorded from 1998 onwards. One nest was built in 2001, two in 2002 and six in 2003. Nest building dates ranged April 30 and May 27. Clutch size and egg dimensions are given. Young fledged only in 2003. The breeding by Mediterranean Gull at this new site seems to continue the overall range expansion of the species in the recent decades.

Dies, J. I. and Dies, B. 2004. Breeding biology and colony size of Sandwich Tern at l'Albufera de Valencia (Western Mediterranean). Ardeola 51(2): 431-435. [English text]
Abstract: The breeding by Sandwich Tern (Sterna sandvicensis) at l'Albufera de Valencia is described. The species started breeding in the study site in 1993. The colony passed from 4 pairs in 1993 to 1,422 pairs in 2003, peaking at 1,591 in 2002. Mean colony growth in pairs was 1.80 and average increase in breeding numbers per year was 159%. Two to four subcolonies were formed each year from 1996 onwards. Subcolonies varied in size (range= 42-1,030 pairs) and location. Breeders arrived by late March, egg laying started by late April. Departures were observed shortly after chicks fledged and the site was fully deserted by late August. The arrival date advanced over the study period, but egg laying did not started earlier during the same period. Modal clutch was two eggs for most years, being significantly different among years. Breeding success was 0.85 chicks fledged per breeding pair (52.7% of eggs).

Dies, J. I., Marín, J. and Pérez, C. 2005. Diet of nesting Gull-billed terns in eastern Spain. Waterbirds 28(1): 106-109. [English text]
Abstract: The prey displayed to mates and delivered to chicks by nesting Gull-billed terns (Sterna nilotica) was studied in a colony on a coastal lagoon in eastern Spain during 2003. During 31 hours of observations, 1,091 prey items were observed. The trophic resources exploited by the species and seasonal differences in prey composition within the same breeding season were examined. Red Swamp Crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) was the main prey species (64% of prey items), followed by insects (17%) and fish (6%). The proportion of terrestrial prey taken was low. Proportionately more aquatic prey was brought to the colony during courtship period and chicks were fed proportionately more aquatic prey earlier in the season. The proportion of vertebrate and invertebrate prey did not change significantly during the season. The prey observed in the study suggests that the Gull-billed Terns foraged mostly in rice fields.

Dies, J. I. and Dies, B. 2005. Kleptoparasitism and host responses in a Sandwich Tern colony of eastern Spain. Waterbirds 28(2): 166-170. [English text]
Abstract: We report on the incidence of kleptoparasites and the host avoidance responses in a colony of the Sandwich Tern (Sterna sandvicensis) at l'Albufera de Valencia, eastern Spain, in 2004. Apart from conspecifics, five species were kleptoparasites of breeding Sandwich Tern, particularly Black-headed Gull (Larus ridibundus) and Slender-billed Gull (L. genei). Avian kleptoparasites attacked 24% of the Sandwich Terns returning to the colony with fish (N = 659) and robbed 5.3% of them. Most terns (85%) delivered their prey to mate or chick. Fish carried by terns were mainly Clupeiformes species (96%). Prey size declined significantly as the season progressed. The probability of attack increased significantly with fish size and declined significantly as the season progressed. Most attacks were on terns as they landed to deliver their prey. Overall sucess rate of attacks was 12.5% and were mostly performed by single birds. The time that the terns spent flying before landing to deliver prey increased with the size of carried fish.
