Recent Reports: Latest sightings JANUARY 2002 (provisional) * rarities needing homologation by the CR/SEO

Grebe* Podiceps auritus. The bird featured last month was still
at El Abra, Gexto, Bizkaia, on 1.1 (Gorka Ocio, Juan Hormaechea, JM Soler,
Miguel de las Heras).At Ria de Ortigueira, A Coruña, Galicia, there
were four on 4.1 (José Miguel Alonso Pumar). The birds featured
last month at Santoña remained there on 3.1 (Miguel A Rouco) but
there were two on 6.1 (Gorka Ocio) Great-White Egret Egretta alba There was one bird at Remolar-Filipines reserve, Llobregat delta on 2.2 (Jordi Clavell, Ferran López).There were two at Tancat de la Ratlla, Albufera de València on 1.1 (F.Javier Garcia i Gans).The Llobregat delta bird was still there on 7-10.1 (Ricard Gutiérrez, Ferran López; David Bigas, Armand Ramal).At Extremadura, there were a couple in the north lagoons by 5.1 (Javier Briz) Barnacle Goose* Branta leucopsis. The bird featured in the november page in Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, is still there on 1.1 (Jordi Martí, Víctor Estrada) and 8.1 (Jordi Martí). Another was at El Abra, Getxo,on 1.1 too (Gorka Ocio, Juan Hormaechea, JM Soler, Miguel de las Heras).Four were at Embalse de Cabredo, Navarra on 7.1. One was yellow-pvc colour-ringed in its right leg (Javier López de Luzuriaga) Brent Goose Branta bernicla. There was a bird present at RN Marismas de Santoña y Noja, Cantabria on 3.1 (Miguel A.Rouco), not seen on 6.1 (Gorka Ocio).Another was at laguna grande, RN Lagunas de Villafáfila, Zamora on 4.1 (Delfín González)A 1st winter bernicla bird was at Salina Grande, Villafáfila, Zamora, on 5.1 (Alfonso Rodrigo, M.Angel Matallanes) Bean Goose Anser fabalis. An increasingly rare species. We welcome observations of this formerly regular bird.At Villafáfila, Zamora, c.4000 birds overwintered until 1981 but 21 in 1997, 9 in 1998, 16 in 1999 , 7 in 2000 and none in 2001 One rossicus bird was at laguna grande and one fabalis was at laguna de Barillo, RN Lagunas de Villafáfila, Zamora on 4.1 (Delfín González) White-fronted
Goose Anser albifrons. The 1st winter bird first seen on 17.11.01,
was still at Remolar-Filipines reserve, Llobregat delta Egyptian
Goose* Alopochen aegyptiacus. There were four individuals at
Bassa de s'Aeroport de Mallorca, Illes Balears, on 2.1 (Lalo Ventoso) where
two had been seen on 27.12 (see decemeber report). Green-winged Teal* Anas carolinensis. A male was found at A Fianteira, O Grove, Pontevera on 3.1 (César Vidal) Mandarin Duck* Aix galericulata. A female appeared (as almost every winter the last years) at Graugés lake, Avià, Barcelona in the Pyrenees on 2.2 (Pere Aymerich, Joan Santandreu; communicated by Lluís Gustamante).At Parque Juan Carlos I, Madrid city, a male arrived on 7.1 behaving wild but turned up to be a ringed and then an escaped bird(Delfín González) Ring-necked Duck* Aythya collaris. A female was seen in a small pond near Vilavedeye, Castropol, Asturies, on 5.1. It could have been there for months as this is a scantly visited location, c.100 km from regular wintering hotspots for the species in central Asturies (where some ring-neckeds present from october, Elias García Sánchez, C.M.Álvarez, J.A.García, D.López, G.Sánchez). At Gravera del Porcal, Madrid, an adult male was found on 6.1, the 1st record for that community (Delfín González, Miguel Juan Martínez) Goldeneye
Bucephala
clangula. The female present last month at canal de Ano, RN Marismas
de Santoña y Noja, Cantabria was still there on 3.1 (Miguel A.Rouco) Velvet
Scoter Melanitta fusca. c.Five were at Fangar bay, Ebre delta
on 2.1 (David Bigas)There were 5 off Remolar beach, Llobregat Delta, Barcelona
on 5.1 (Moisés Moreno
et al). Another was at Ria de Ortigueira,

adult female was seen off Ladeira beach, Baiona, Pontevedra on 6-7.1 (César
Vidal). There were 10 birds (2 males)off Llobregat delta, Barcelona, on
9-10.1 (January wildfowl count/F.López, J.Castelló,R.Gutiérrez,
D.Bigas) Eider
Somateria
mollissima. A 1st winter male was present off Bengoa, Euskadi, on 3.1
(José Miguel Devesa). A female was seen at Santoña, Cantabria
on 6.1 (Gorka Ocio). A female and a 1st winter male at ria de Eo, Asturies/Lugo
were seen on 5.1 and are present there from late december. Very rare in
that area (Elias García Sánchez, C.M.Álvarez, J.A.García,
D.López, G.Sánchez). HOODED
MERGANSER* Lophodytes cucullatus.1st FOR SPAIN. The female/
1st winter first seen at Charca de riego de Playa
Paraiso, Tenerife, Canary Islands on 11-12.12.2001 (see
december 2001 reports and thumbnail) was seen again

Eagle* Aquila clanga. A 1st winter was seen at La Rocina, Doñana,
by late december-early january (Santiago Villa Méndez) Lanner Falcon* Falco biarmicus. A first winter bird of the erlangeri subspecies, was seen again at close range at Gallinera ricefields, PN Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, on 1.1 (Jordi Martí, Víctor Estrada).Previously seen on 2.12. Allen's
Gallinule* Porphyrula alleni. A first winter rallidae
assigned to this species given the submitted description was seen on 8.1.2002
at es Pagos, Porreres, Mallorca, Balearic Islands (Joan Riera). Crested Coot Fulica cristata. There were three birds at Caño del Guadiamar, Sevilla on 3.1 (Paco Chiclana). Another semi-domestic bird carrying a pvc collar was nearby as well.At Marjal d'Almenara, Castelló de la Plana, two pvc-collared coots were seen on 5.1. These birds come from the reintroduction scheme hold by Generalitat Valenciana. It is the 1st record for the area (Victor J Hernández). A white pvc-collared bird was at Lucio de la Dehesa, Doñana on 7.1 (J.Garzón, JR Súnico) Spotted Sandpiper* Actitis macularia. At El Pinque,Playa Paraiso, Tenerife, Canary Islands a bird was reported on 5.1 (Tony Clarke) Glaucous Gull* Laarus hyperboreus. A bird was at Paramean beach, esteiro, Muros, A Coruña, Galicia on 8.1 (José Maria Martínez) Richard's
Pipit* Anthus richardi. A bird was reported from Amarilla golf,
Tenerife, Canary Islands on 5.1 along with a few Red-throated pipitsAnthus
cervinus (Tony Clarke). On 6.1 there was a bird at Xustás, Castro
de Rei, Terrá Chá, Lugo (Antonio Sandoval) Northern Grey Shrike Lanius excubitor. A true rarity for the country but present scarcely in the N. All sightings of this species should be published elsewhere to clarify the present status of this form. A bird was at Cospeito, Lugo on 6.1 (Antonio Sandoval) Brambling Fringilla montifringilla. Large flock in an unusual place .From 100-150 birds in a mixed flock with Chaffinches F.coelebs were present near Xinzo de Limia, Ourense, Galicia on 8.1 (César Vidal) CHESTNUT
BUNTING* Emberiza rutila. Once reviewed the two slides obtained,
the authors have withdrawn the record without being still clear to which
species belonged that bird seen last month (see
december records), so no 1st record for the country (as told through
Nonapo mail list to the editor)
