(3) Marc Ravalomanana declared himself president on 22 Feb 2002 after claiming to be the winner in the elections held in Dec 2001, but this move was not recognized by outgoing incumbent Didier Ratsiraka, who considered himself the country's legal president. On 5 Jul 2002 Ratsiraka fled abroad, leaving Ravalomanana as the only president and putting the political crisis to the end.
