FROM MIDDLE AGE TO NOWADAYS

During Middle Age, the history of Agolada, goes inside to the history of Deza County that belonged to it. According to the "Escrituras Lucenses" (historical chronic of Galicia), the seventh county, called "decense", begin in the "Summio" Mountain (today known like Farelo Mountain) to Arnego river following to "Arnois" (today "La Estrada"). In these years, and in the artistic field claim for our attention the proliferation of romanic churches being outstanding the churches of Ferreiroa, Órrea, Ventosa y Borraxeiros.

To the end of XIV Century, these lands were dominated by the Deza Lords, called too Deza "Churruchaos". The war beetween "Churruchaos" and Santiago Archbishop took place in these lands. Severall years before Agolada appears dominated by the Count of Lemos, Pedro Enríquez de Castro.

In the next century, the "Moscoso" appears as the lords of lands and properties in several jurisdiccional zones and were commendators of Baiña Monastry, which was demolished by "Irmandiños" during their revolution. Borraxeiros fortress, belonging to the Altamira House, was demolished too during the same revolution in year 1.647. A lot of elements of the old Borraxeiros fortress were used for the construction, in the XVII Century, of the "Pazo de los Salgado" as well known nowadays like "Pazo de Borraxeiros" one of the most beautiful works of civil architecture preserved today in Galicia and worthy to visit it.

In the year 1.700 Borraxeiros land, and jurisdictional zones of Ventosa and Carmoega (in those years the center of the municipality known like Curmoga), belonged to the Sant Yago province, one of the seven ones that compunded the ancient Kingdom of Galicia.

In that century Agolada began to grow around the "feira" (which is celebrated today every 12th. day of every month), which is transfered from Chaos de Aián, to the Farelo Mountain slope, to be celebrated in  Agolada place. The "feira" was sitted in the old marketplace, a true historic-artistic monument, with rude constructions that give a prehistorical look, and are a singular exemple of this kind of rural architecture.

Of this century are the churches of Vilariño (barroc style), Santa Comba (neoclasic style), Brántega y Sta María de Val de Sangorza (rural-barroc style).

The "carlista" movement had a lot of support in this land and there were bloody batlles. Oral tradition remenber several episodes in that are outstanding the combat that took place in December 1.835 in the Eidián Village when "carlistas" troops were surprised sleeping in the "Casa do Cego".
