| Unfortunately, since Jan. 1 2001, this Discussion
Group no longer exists. It was great while it lasted.
Thank you very much Richard Pearce-Moses - it was a truly important place for many! It seems like the archives of the letters sent to the list since Jan. 1993 to Dec. 2000, will still be accessible for a period of time, at least a month long is what was mentioned in the final notes posted on the list by the owner. Some plans to make a new History of Photography group seem to be taking place, news on this matter might be posted on the page (linked here) that used to provide services for subscription and access to the archive. This is a very interesting disscusion group that specifically focuses on the History of Photography. It has an average of 650 to 700 subscribers (most in/from the US, but the percentage of international subscribers is high and growing), so it is not rare that even the most improbable queries receive a fast and reliable response. The level of participation is very high and the owner of this discussion group (Richard Pearce-Moses) manages to maintain it well focussed on the subject of History of Photography (in all its manifestations and orientations) and free of "background noise". The archive of theletters of this discussion group (that can be reached at in the page referred to in this link) is an interesting source to find information on the very many subjects that have already been discussed. | A few interesting early photographic reference
e-books/articles can be downloaded here. (As for example Samuel D. Humphrey's
1858 "The American Handbook of the Daguerreotype".
One can also find these early photography e-texts in the archives of the Gutenberg Project. |

The Royal Photographic Society is of course
one of the oldest and most prestigious photographic institutions ever (founded
in 1853). It holds one of the best art photography collections in Europe,
has an extraordinary library, and has recently included an interesting
on-line "Collection
Book" that gives a good idea of the nature and scope of their collections.
For precise information and details on their collections see the "List
of Major Collections of Works". The RPS is an active institution in
research, publications and organizes several exhibitions a year:
"The Society runs the highly acclaimed Octagon Galleries in the heart of historic Bath, England which house four changing exhibitions of photography and a museum of the history of photography drawn from the Society's internationally important Collection". |

Rochester NY, US |
|
| This museum has one of the most important
collections and library on nineteenth century photography. It was created
with the holdings of Kodak's founder and philanthropist George Eastman
(1854-1932) - and is housed in what was his original mansion.
The importance of their holdings, as well as their activities and prestigious courses developed in recent years, has made this institution one of necessary reference for all interested in the history of photography. Their telnet searchable data base of photographers is one of the largest available today and it is a specially useful tool for name reference searches. The telnet connection is at the "remote system": geh.org. Password is: GUEST2. Note that this data base is case sensitive, names must be typed in with their first letter capitalized. (For telnet connections you must have telnet.exe program installed and correctly configured). |

Photography Collection |
|
| This prestigious humanities and social sciences
library has a large photographic collection of close to 300,000 original
prints. An important source for the study of the history of photography
itself, even when it is specialized in photographic aspects that have to
do with what is now understood as "documentary". There are close to 14,000
photography titles books associated to the collection.
Some of the collections can be accessed directly though their "on-line" CATNYP catalogue. |

| The important photographic archive of C.B.
Waite that is held in the Archivo General de la Nación de
México is accessible through this page (one that branches out of
Arte
e Historia : "Publicación electrónica dedicada

[An electronic publication devoted to the promotion of Art, Culture and
the History of Mexico]).
Charles B. Waite (c. 1860 - c. 1929) was a North American photographer that traveled extensively with his camera though Mexico during the first decades of the twentieth century producing a large amount of images. As the Mexican photo-historian Francisco Montellano* states, CB. Waite was ".... a tireless traveler, ... that took views of most of Mexico, of inaccessible and hidden places where he traveled by train, car, ox carts, burro, horse or, simply on foot". Waite's series of views produced as postcards are specially representative of his work. One can view a brief selection of Waite's work at an exhibition of postcards at the Museo de Filatelia de Oaxaca (Mexico). |

FOTOTECA; Pachuca, Hidalgo - Mexico |
|
The well known "Fototeca de Pachuca"
started back in 1976 when INAH acquired the Casasola Archive. This archive
contains most of what during many years was produced by the photographic
saga started by Agustín Víctor Casasola (1874-1934) around
the beginnings of the twentieth century. During the successive years of
the Fototeca's existence it has incorporated many new photographic
archives and is presently one of the largest photographic holdings in Mexico.
The Fototeca says about their own holdings:
"The Fototeca of the INAH ... can be considered as a center of prime importance for the study of photography, since it holds representative heritage on the major photographic processes, from daguerreotypes of the 1840's to modern 35mm. polyester films. In 1992 the SINAFO (Sistema Nacional de Fototecas [Photographic Collections National System]) was created and it "is part of the Coordinación Nacional de Difusión del Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia. This system is orientated "towards the normalization and coordination of the activities that are generated at the photographic archives that the Instituto [INAH] officially holds in the Mexican Republic." |

| The "Guia de fons en imatge de Girona"
[Guide of the image collections in Girona] has been published recently
(1999 - ISBN: 894-86837-79-0) and will be commented here even when it is
not a web site. It is an important Guide published by the Ajuntament
[Town
hall] de Girona (nº9 of their series Col·lecció
de Guies Urbanes [Collection of Urban Guides]). This Guide was produced
by a large team under the direction of Joan Boadas i Raset and Lluís-Esteve
Casellas i Serra.
This is a real guide to image repositories (photographs, film, etc.) in the province of Girona [in the far most north-east side of the peninsula, next to France and the Mediterranean]. A variable number of pages in the guide is devoted to each archive or collection that can be found in the province of Girona. Each one of them is described through a normalized file card where the contents and the general and specific nature of the images are fully stated. The attractive illustrations (very neatly produced) serve as practical references with which one can get a general idea of the nature of the images described. A thematic and name index (all in one) has been included. [Another photographic publication by Ajuntament de Girona can not be left unmentioned here. They also publish the Proceedings of the Jornadas Antonio Varés - a biannual symposium on Image Studies they organize. Up to five volumes have been published so far - with the tittle Girona - La imatge i la recerca històrica. Ponencias i comunicaciones [Girona - Image and History Research. Papers and Communications], (volume V -Nov. 1998 - has been published under the title: Girona - Imatge i recerca. Ponencias i comunicaciones).] The Ajuntament de Girona can very well brag about its involvement in the support of photography. |

"photographs ... of Bolivia" |
|
| Javier Nuñez de Arco's web pages put forward one of the largest private collections in Bolivia that contains a large variety of photographs and photographic apparatus, and it pretends to "be usefull to researchers and all those interested in art". This large collection includes several negative archives, such as the one originally created by Arturo Posnansky for the documentation of his well known 1940's studies of the archaelogical remains of Tiahuanacu (Tiwanaku, or Tihuanaco). | |
