These links have no specific order and are only a small compilation of institutions and other interesting places that can be of use as starting points to find relevant resources and information related to the History of Photography. Much can be found on internet on this subject, but I have included here some of the links known to me that I understand have substantial information or that point in the direction of relevant or rare international photographic resources

History of Photography Discussion Group - PHOTOHST
(Subscription, index, etc.)
Unfortunately, since Jan. 1 2001, this Discussion Group no longer exists. It was great while it lasted.

Thank you very much Richard Pearce-Moses - it was a truly important place for many!

It seems like the archives of the letters sent to the list since Jan. 1993 to Dec. 2000, will still be accessible for a period of time, at least a month long is what was mentioned in the final notes posted on the list by the owner. Some plans to make a new History of Photography group seem to be taking place, news on this matter might be posted on the page (linked here) that used to provide services for subscription and access to the archive.

This is a very interesting disscusion group that specifically focuses on the History of Photography. It has an average of 650 to 700 subscribers (most in/from the US, but the percentage of international subscribers is high and growing), so it is not rare that even the most improbable queries receive a fast and reliable response. The level of participation is very high and the owner of this discussion group (Richard Pearce-Moses) manages to maintain it well focussed on the subject of History of Photography (in all its manifestations and orientations) and free of "background noise".

The archive of theletters of this discussion group (that can be reached at in the page referred to in this link) is an interesting source to find information on the very many subjects that have already been discussed.

NEW
It is now possible to sent letters to this list, manage your subscription, and search the archive at the new archive page of Archives of PHOTOHST@ASU.EDU. This search tool looks into the full archive of the list - from Jan. 1993 that it started up to the present month. Registration  is required: to register just click on one of the periods of time and a direct registration form will pop up.

The Correspondence of  William Henry Fox Talbot
University of Glasgow, UK
This project, directed by Professor Larry Schaaf, is still (January 2000) under construction, and it promises to be an important source of information. It is to provide access to the contents of William Henry Fox Talbot's correspondence, and will be invaluable for any research on the history of W.H.F. Talbot, early photography in general, and for any study on the calotype process.

"A History of Photography from its beginnings till the 1920's"  by Dr. Robert Leggat
This is a very didactic and solid on-line History of Photography - undoubtedly a convenient source for students and researchers alike. This is a very convenient history for those that need to refresh their general photo-history knowledge, particularly in subjects and photographers related to photography as a creative media that in one way or another had to do with the Royal Photographic Society.

The Library of Congress - Prints and Photographs Division; Washington DC, US
# Prints and Photographs Reading Room Home Page
# Prints & Photographs On-line Catalog
This is of course an important site for all interested in the history of photography, and not only because of the important book and photography collection they hold; many of their monographic pages and on-line exhibitions are well worth a visit.

The Digital Daguerreian Archive
A few interesting early photographic reference e-books/articles can be downloaded here. (As for example Samuel D. Humphrey's 1858 "The American Handbook of the Daguerreotype"

"The Tulane University Latin American Photographic Archive contains over fifty major collections of  photographs and close to 25,000 individual items, dating from the mid-19th century to the present. Areas of interest include the colonial architecture of Peru, Mexico, and Guatemala; and pre-Columbian art and artifacts, ethnological material on Indian villages, costumes, and archeological sites, particularly in Mexico, Guatemala, and elsewhere in Central America. A number of collections provide valuable photographs relating to contemporary social anthropology in Mexico, Guatemala, and other areas. All of the collections listed on this page are located in the Latin American Library, but many other photographs relating to the archaeology and anthropology of the Mesoamerican region are housed in the Middle American Research Institute".

This page has an extensive list of the natural groups that conform the photographic collections of the Latin American Library, in each case with descriptions and provenance. Many of them have references to a set of representative digital images that are supposed to give an idea of the nature of a particular group of material; in other cases one finds links to pages with detailed item lists of the content of a given group of photographs.

Their telnet searchable data base of photographers is one of the largest available today and it is a specially useful tool for name reference searches. The telnet connection is at the "remote system": geh.org.  Password is: GUEST2. Note that this data base is case sensitive, names must  be typed in with their first letter capitalized.  (For telnet connections you must have telnet.exe program installed and correctly configured).

GIRONA - Guia de fons en imatge (bibliographic reference)
The "Guia de fons en imatge de Girona" [Guide of the image collections in Girona] has been published recently (1999 - ISBN: 894-86837-79-0) and will be commented here even when it is not a web site. It is an important Guide published by the Ajuntament [Town hall] de Girona (nº9 of their series Col·lecció de Guies Urbanes [Collection of Urban Guides]). This Guide was produced by a large team under the direction of Joan Boadas i Raset and Lluís-Esteve Casellas i Serra.

This is a real guide to image repositories (photographs, film, etc.) in the province of Girona [in the far most north-east side of the peninsula, next to France and the Mediterranean]. A variable number of pages in the guide is devoted to each archive or collection that can be found in the province of Girona. Each one of them is described through a normalized file card where the contents and the general and specific nature of the images are fully stated. The attractive illustrations (very neatly produced) serve as practical references with which one can get a general idea of the nature of the images described. A thematic and name index (all in one) has been included.

[Another photographic publication by Ajuntament de Girona can not be left unmentioned here.  They also publish the Proceedings of the Jornadas Antonio Varés - a biannual symposium on Image Studies they organize. Up to five volumes have been published so far - with the tittle Girona - La imatge i la recerca històrica. Ponencias i comunicaciones [Girona - Image and History Research. Papers and Communications], (volume V -Nov. 1998 - has been published under the title: Girona - Imatge i recerca. Ponencias i comunicaciones).]
